How to Protect your Computer for Free

Posted by W8JKC on April 11th, 2009

I always hear the same question from my friends and family, \”How do I protect my computer from viruses and spyware…?\” or it\’s variant \”What is the best virus scanner or spyware program…?\”

While I can\’t tell you exactly which is the best software to suit your needs, I can recommend the software that I use on a daily basis with My Windows Vista /Ubuntu 8.10 (dual booted) laptop.

On the Windows side, I have installed and use 2 programs to protect from viruses and spyware. The first one which protects from all sort of attacks and malicous software is called AVG Free. This program is developed by a company called AVG Technlogies (formerly Grisoft). To download see here or skip directly to the Windows download here.
I have used AVG on all my computers for the last 3 years with no problems since I installed it. Before AVG I had used either McAfee or Norton depending on which computer I was on and after installing it, I found that the previous program failed to detect some spyware and even a couple viruses on 2 occasions.

The second program I use is a firewall to block all malicous connections to and from my computer. This program is called Comodo Internet Security and it is developed by a company called Comodo Security Solutions. While the benefits of using this program are numerous, the down side is that after you install it, most if not all of your normal everyday programs have to be \”trained\” into Comodo so that it does not block them from accessing the internet or your files. This is fairly easy to do, as it will pop up on your screen, but it may get annoying for the first 2 weeks of using Comodo. During the setup of Comodo you have 3 options to choose from. The first is install the firewall only, the second is install the AntiVirus only, and the third is to install both. I chose firewall only, but feel free to choose any of them but keep in mind that it may give you errors and conflicts with AVG. See the Comodo site here or skip directly to the Windows download here.

When in Ubuntu I also use AVG, they have a version for linux and other operating systems.

To protect my whole network, my DSL modem is directly connected to a Smoothwall Linux Firewall/Router box. This helps protect the whole network with IDS, ICMP blocking, and many other features, It even allows URL, MAC, IP, and many other blocking options for outgoing connections.

If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to submit them below, or you can email me justin@w8jkc.com.
I would love to hear what programs you use, and why you use them.

Quad County REACT goes to Suitland, MD

Posted by W8JKC on April 7th, 2009

On Thursday, March 12th 2009, 8 members of Quad County REACT traveled to Suitland, MD to attend the annual meeting of REACT International on March 13th. We left around 1315hrs from Beloit, OH. Around 1745 we arrived in Washington, DC and decided to stop and check out the area, instead of heading straight to the hotel in Suitland. We visited the area of our nation’s capitol for about 2 1/2 hours. We then decided to continue on to the hotel, and after checking in, we decided to meet and discuss our agenda and topics for the meeting. Everyone retired to their rooms around 0130hrs to get some sleep for the meeting later that day.

At around 0730hrs everyone was up and getting ready to head over to the REACT International offices for the meeting which was slated to start at 0830. We had a little trouble finding room to sit down, but we did, and it became apparent to us that there was standing-room only left.

We each received copies of the agenda for that day, and minutes from a previous meeting (Nov. 25th 2007) that were to be voted on for approval. (The meeting agenda is attached, see link at bottom of page.) Around 1030hrs the Board adjourned for a 10 minute break. When the meeting was called back to order, such items as budget, fund-raising among many others were discussed. (See Meeting Minutes attached.) Around 1150hrs the Board decided to adjourn again for lunch and to resume at 1330hrs. It was also decided that the Visitor session would be the first matter to be discussed upon returning.

When we returned from lunch at the local Pizza Hut, the board asked Mr. Jim Dyke, President of our team to present our items. Mr. Dyke presented the following items: (See our agenda at the bottom of the page.)

Mr. Dyke began by quoting section 9.18 from the bylaws;

Section 9.18 Waiver of these bylaws. Since these bylaws are established for the protection of all Members, they may not be waived or suspended at any time.

and section 3.7;

Section 3.7 Denial or Termination of Membership. The Board of Directors may deny application for or revoke membership of any Member Team, Life Member, or Affiliate Member, or remove council recognition, for cause the Board deems prejudicial to the best interests of the corporation. A removal action taken will be in writing and mailed by certified mail to the applicant or Member. The applicant or Member will have forty five (45) days of receipt to appeal the decision stating why the action should not be taken. The Board of Directors will review the appeal and issue a final decision within sixty (60) days.

Mr. Dyke then presented a letter that Mr. Jason Boone of the Ohio REACT Council sent to the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce to all Board members.(The letter is attached below.) Basically, the letter stated that our tem charter was revoked, we were no longer a REACT team, and that MCRRT C260 was the team in Stark County, and was willing to assist with their events instead of our team.

Mr. Dyke also explained that this letter was a flagrant violation of the bylaws, and that Ohio REACT Council had no right, or authority to act on behalf of REACT International and issue/send such a letter. He also explained that we believed that Mr. Don Manlove may have been involved with this letter and the denial of our membership renewal.

Both of these persons (Boone and Manlove) had violated REACT International bylaws, citing section 3.7, and that only the Board can revoke or deny membership.

Mr. Dyke went on stating that we believed that the only way to resolve this issue was to suspend Ohio REACT Council, and complete and investigation into the matter. We also requested that MCRRT C260 be included in the investigation, and if it was found that they held any part in issuing or sending it, that charter be revoked. Mr. Dyke also requested on behalf of the team that Mr. Manlove have his own investigation, and for him to resign and/or the board take action to remove him from his position if he was found to have any part in the letter or denying our renewal as a team.

Several items were explained to the Board about MCRRT C260 such as them carrying badges, and other various issues that they have been involved with. These issues also include some Federally Illegal matters that were also brought up.

Note: A video of Mr. Dyke’s presentation to the board with audio is attached. See the bottom of the page.

The Board was appalled that Ohio REACT Council would do such a thing, and a discussion on the matter was opened.

During the discussion it was brought up that Ohio REACT Council had similar suspensions and investigations at least 3 or 4 times in the past.

The Board motioned that Ohio REACT Council be suspended, and an investigation be completed on their actions. The motion passed.
The Board motioned that a letter of apology be written and sent to our team, the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce, and any agency in our area that we deem, and/or may have been involved.

After our issues were discussed and acted upon, we thanked the Board for the time on the floor and for their cooperation on the matter.
We left the meeting around 1530hrs and went to the hotel to check out. We decided to revisit Washington, DC on the way home for better photo oppurtunities, and to see attractions that we hadn’t the night before. We visited The White House, The U.S. Capitol Building, The FTC/FAA Building in DC, then we left to visit the Pentagon and memorial. After we were done visiting, we continued on the long ride home. We stopped in Breezewood, PA for dinner around 2145. We arrived back in Ohio around 0130, and everyone finally arrived home around 0300hrs. The trip was deemed a success, and well worth it. We had fun, and when needed we got down to business.

Any Questions or Comments on the items brought up with the Board may be submitted to Mr. Jim Dyke (President) (330) 280-4857 jdyke@quadcountyreact.org.
Any Questions or Comments on the trip or other topics may be submitted to Mr. Dave Coleman (Vice President) (330) 704-0521 dcoleman@quadcountyreact.org; Mr. Matt Boudreaux (Operations Manager) (330) 685-5674 mboudreaux@quadcountyreact.org; or Mr. Justin Corner (Webmaster) (330) 879-8552 jcorner@quadcountyreact.org

Stark County Trunked Radio System

Posted by W8JKC on February 23rd, 2009

Recently, I have been monitoring the Stark County/Canton City 800Mhz Motorola Trunked Radio System.

This system id’s itself as 8E0A. While information about talkgroups and such can be found on radioreference.com [LINK], some talkgroups are appearing on my system that are not listed.

I have found and am using 2 programs to decode the control channel, and find out the use of these new talkgroups. The first program is called Trunk88 and is DOS based. The second program is called Universal Trunker and while the version that I am using is based on DOS, there is a Win32 version available.

Both of these programs will display which Talkgroup, and Radio ID is on each of the trunking systems channels at the current time, which radios affiliate to which talkgroups, and other information that is sent over the control channel.

So far I have found about 10-15 different talkgroups that are not listed, and are being used.

Below is a list which includes these talkgroups and how many times it has been logged, and at what time it was logged.

Note: These talkgroups were monitored on the CROMER site, on 855.0375 Mhz.

These programs also require that you modify a scanner to get the baseband audio signal from the chip, before the filters that are to limit the audio for the human aural range of sound.

All of these new talkgroups can be listened to on ScanAmerica.us [LINK], both Stark County feeds are provided by me.

If you happen to monitor this system yourself, and find anything out about these talkgroups, please let me know by leaving a comment or emailing me at 8E0A@w8jkc.com.

Even something as simple as “I heard 144 say that the intersection of 12th St and Market Ave. needs to be…”, anything that may help to identify these talkgroups.

Stark County Sheriff Rants

Posted by W8JKC on January 15th, 2009

From the blog on DeLucaShow.net:

\”Sheriff Roscoe P. Swanson has suffered some much deserved criticizm over the air courtesy of me in the past year. From the Hope Steffie incident to budget mismanagement (including the nice Lexus he drives at taxpayer expense), I\’ve taken every opportunity to remind Stark County how inept this individual is at running one of the most important governmental offices.

In November the \”not so bright\” electorate of Stark County voted this incompetant bumpkin back into office. His challenger, the much more experienced and even tempered Larry Dordea, lost by some 20,000 votes.

After the overwhelming re-election of Mr. Swanson, I decided to back off a bit. I figured \”hey, the people have spoken\” and my opinions of the Sheriff were better left to myself. I bit my lip when the Sheriff \”retired\” at the end of 2008 so he could begin collecting his pension (double dipping) at the start of 2009. I kept my mouth shut about how many of his own staff have expressed their disgust that they\’ll have to work under his regime for another 4 more years. I\’ve said NOTHING about ol\’ Roscoe… until now.

On December 29th, the Stark County Commissioners held a public hearing on the plan to increase the counties sales tax by .25%. Many elected officals along with everyday constituants stood up and made speeches both for and against the sales tax increase. Then Sheriff Roscoe stood up. Here\’s a transcript of his tyrade:

Thanks for giving me the time. Also, Jane, thanks for your service over the years. We didn’t always see eye to eye. You and the milk and I don’t get along. If you want to send 1,200 cartons of milk out a day, Mr. Haas, you can do so.

You guys were elected to run Stark County government. I was elected to be sheriff. I’ve done some unpopular things as sheriff because it was required by law that I do it. I know the financial difficulties we’re in. No one knows more than me. In 2003, you cut my budget; I laid off 64 people. This year you cut my budget; I laid off 23. Due to those layoffs I had to close parts of the jail because there was no one there to watch the prisoners.

Of course some in the public thought the sheriff will just let out prisoners to scare us. That’s so B.S. it makes me puke. What I’ve heard here today makes me sick because people don’t come in here educated, don’t know what the hell they’re talking about.

They read the newspaper. They come in here with some bull crap someone has put in their mind. But they’ve not yet gone to county government to draw your records, to get the Auditor’s records, to go to the Treasurer and research it and get the honest to God truth about where we stand financially.

I applaud you. I support the tax. If I get nailed again, I’m going to lay off some more people. I don’t want to do that. It’s very hard to do. But I have to live within my budget. It’s against the law for me not to. I’m going to close portions of the jail down; that’s going to make the judges unhappy. It’s going to make the public unhappy. But what goes around comes around and that’s what has to be done.

If you don’t like it, don’t vote for me in four years because I’m retired. And I’m one of those double dippers. And I’m proud that I’m a double dipper. And in two more years I’m going to retire from the military and I’m going to double dip there, too. Ok?

So you’re going to live with what you want. You don’t want this tax, then you’re going to live with what it brings you. That’s all you’re going to do. Some of you aren’t a victim of crime in here, nor are you a person who’s had to call 911. Ok?

You’ve never come to the Stark County Sheriff’s. Who eats the most of Stark County government money? Who eats it? The Stark County Jail? My budget’s $16 (million), $17 million. Plus, with the rest of criminal justice with it we consume all of it. That’s what the people want.

I’ll do what you want. No tax. No deputies. I’m lucky to have two people on the road now. If you live in an unincorporated area, I’ll get the car there when I can get it there. If I can’t – FUCK them. They just don’t come out of the sky. You’ve got to pay them. They deserve a salary just like everybody else who works.

But they aren’t paid enough. If you think the deputies are paid too much or the police officers are paid too much in this county then you go to work for law enforcement. Every day they put their life on the line for this county. And they go home and their mothers, their parents, their children are praying they did get to go home that day.

If you don’t like it, move somewhere else where you will like it. I support you (commissioners) 100 percent. Thank you for having the balls and the ability to do so and the gumption to do so and I applaud you. If they don’t elect you again you can rest with yourself that you did the right thing. Thanks.

Wow! Although it\’s impressive to hear an elected official use such profanity, I really don\’t think it\’s appropriate. ESPECIALLY when it\’s directed toward the people that reelected this douche back into office.\”

Server Upgrade

Posted by W8JKC on December 4th, 2008

This past thanksgiving weekend I upgraded my primary server.

I backed up about 19 GB of data, including websites, configurations, and other important data. That took about 7 hours. After that was complete I DBAN\’ed the hardrives and proceeded to boot from a CentOS 5 netinstall disk. This took about 1 hour to download and install all the packages and format the harddrives.

Here are the details of this server:

RAM: 380 MB, soon to be upgrade to about 1GB.
CPU: Intel Pentium 3 (667Mhz)
Graphics Card: ATI Rage 3 128 RF/SG AGP

Main HD: 10GB Fujitsu MPF3102AT
Second HD: 80GB Western Digital
WD800BB-55JKC0
Network Card: 10/100 MBPS
Intel Corporation 82557/8/9/0/1 Ethernet Pro 100

Mount Points:
/boot EXT3 /dev/hda1 122 MB
/        EXT3 /dev/hda2 6.2GB
/tmp  EXT3 /dev/hda5 1GB
/var    EXT3 /dev/hdb1 72GB

Note: You can view this systems details at any time by visiting http://wcatserver2.wcatnews.com

I attempted to install an Hosting Control Panel package, but it didn\’t work. Maybe later I can install a package such as ISPConfig (http://www.ispconfig.org)

This server is better with page load times, and speed than the old one. On average it took 30 secs or more to load this blog from the local network. Now it loads in under 10 seconds. Ideally after the RAM is upgraded it should load in under 5 seconds.

If you want more information on this box , please leave a comment or email me.

I am setting up a Mail, Mailing List, and Web Server on this machine, along with the Stark Scanner feed for http://scanamerica.us
You will notice on the right menu bar below the iTunes Video of the Week, a new Web Player of this feed.
For now I set that to plat Chicago FD, due to the fact that the software to broadcast the audio is not setup yet.
Server1 (http://wcatserver1.wcatnews.com) will host backup Web, IRC, and other software.

Both servers support SSL, PHP, and MySQL.

Will yote for Dordea with me or will you vote for the other candidate that has a record for failing to do his job right?

WX-JS Officially Released

Posted by W8JKC on October 9th, 2008

I am now officially releasing WX-JS, a free project that allows you to add dynamic Weather Alerts to your website through a simple javascript code.

This project coincides with my WX-IMG project, and uses the same data from an RSS feed over at weather.gov, which is updated about every 5 minutes.

Currently, these scripts grab the feed from weather.gov everytime the script is accessed, and the more people who use these projects, the more bandwidth it will use from my ISP, and to weather.gov

The next version of these projects will include a 5 minute server side cache of the data from the weather.gov feed, and will tell the browser to cache the image or data for same expire time as the feed cache.

This will allow more people to use my script, with less server load on my end, along with bandwidth to me and to weather.gov

To use my WX-JS script: Visit this page for instructions.
